Il simbolismo del lupo è molto è perché presenta un lato distruttivo ed uno costruttivo, associato al concetto di rinascita. Il lupo, infatti, oltre a essere spesso indicato come archetipo delle tenebre, il che avviene con più frequenza nelle sue rappresentazioni moderne, è spesso legato a divinità luminose, come Apollo, definito lukogenès, ossia ‘nato da lupo’. Lo stesso Zeus è sovente soprannominato lukios, cioè ‘a forma di lupo’. Il termine greco per lupo, ovvero lukos è affine a lyké, vale a dire ‘luce’. Gli Irpini, durante le Guerre Sannitiche, avevano un motto: “Hirpus Harpe Tahè Kyuì” che in lingua osca significa “I lupi combattono per la libertà“ . Il simbolismo del lupo è fondamentalmente un simbolismo guerriero. Rappresentò la guida per tre tribù dell’Italia preromana, che ebbero questo feroce animale come loro riferimento ancestrale: la prima è la tribù quella degli Irpini, il cui nome deriva dalla lingua osca hirpos, che significa lupo.

The symbolism of the wolf is very important because it has a destructive side and a constructive side, associated to the concept of rebirth. The wolf, in fact, in addition to being often indicated as an archetype of darkness, which occurs more frequently in its modern representations, is often linked to bright deities, such as Apollo, defined as lukogenès, that is ‘born of wolf’. Zeus himself is often nicknamed lukios, that is ‘wolf-shaped’. The Greek term for wolf, that is lukos is similar to lyké, that is to say ‘light’. The Irpini, during the Sannitiche Wars, had a motto: “Hirpus Harpe Tahè Kyuì” that in language osca means “The wolves fight for the freedom”. The symbolism of the wolf is fundamentally a warrior symbolism. It represented the guide for three tribes of pre-Roman Italy, which had this ferocious animal as their ancestral reference: the first is the tribe of the Irpini, whose name derives from the Oscan language hirpos, which means wolf.
