Umberto Mulignano è un artista napoletano. L’ho conosciuto una mattina ai tavoli di un caffè-libreria del centro storico di Napoli. Mi incuriosì subito quello che stava facendo: scriveva i testi per un’opera che aveva intenzione di illustrare. Un romanzo per ragazzi, mi disse, ambientato in Scozia negli anni ’50. Iniziammo a chiacchierare e dopo un po’ Umberto mi mostrò le sue creazioni. Restai estasiato. Umberto affonda le radici della sua arte nella più pura cultura celtica, in quel mondo fantasy scaturito dalle antiche tradizioni pagane dei popoli del nord. Umberto crea draghi. Esseri buffi, grotteschi, graziosi, dagli occhi grandi, le piccole zanne e le ali che gli spuntano dal capo come fossero orecchie. Il suo universo è popolato da queste strane e colorate creature, che l’artista plasma da blocchi di pasta polimerica, reinventando il nutrito universo di quelle ancestrali leggende.

Dragon sculptures: Umberto Mulignano, Neapolitan artist and his works that cure the soul.
Umberto Mulignano is a Neapolitan artist. I met him one morning at the tables of a coffee-book shop in the historic center of Naples. I was immediately intrigued by what he was doing: he was writing the texts for a work he intended to illustrate. A novel for children, he told me, set in Scotland in the 50s. We started chatting and after a while Umberto showed me his creations. I was ecstatic. Umberto’s art is rooted in the purest Celtic culture, in that fantasy world that sprang from the ancient pagan traditions of the northern peoples. Umberto creates dragons. Funny, grotesque, graceful beings with big eyes, small tusks and wings that sprout from his head as if they were ears. His universe is populated by these strange and colorful creatures, which the artist moulds from blocks of polymer paste, reinventing the rich universe of those ancestral legends.
