Combattimenti medievali a Napoli all’epoca del poeta Francesco Petrarca. Ai tempi del Medioevo molte città avevano al di fuori della mura di cinta delle fosse predisposte ad accogliere ogni specie di rifiuti, chiamate Carbonario o Carboneto. Luoghi predisposti per accogliere qualsiasi sorta di rifiuti, come per esempio le acque luride o le carogne degli animali. Nella città del Vesuvio il Carbonario era situato dove attualmente sorge la strada e la maestosa chiesa di San Giovanni a Carbonara. Poco distante, in Piazza Carbonara, venivano allestite le Giostre, ossia i giochi equestri o i combattimenti tra Gladiatori, che rappresentavano il divertimento del popolo e dei regnanti. La Piazza Carbonara naturalmente, godeva dell’immunità, per cui due individui o due brigate avevano la possibilità di battersi fino alla morte rimanendo impuniti. Inoltre, in caso di offesa tutti potevano sfidare in duello l’offensore in questa piazza. I duelli erano divenuti ormai un’abitudine ed era una specie di spettacolo, al quale assistevano curiosi, non solo i popolani ma anche i Signori ed i Principi. Il noto poeta toscano Francesco Petrarca, il quale vide uno di questi giochi, li racconta in una lettera scritta al Cardinale Giovanni Colonna. Questi scrisse quanto segue: “In pieno giorno, alla vista del Popolo, al cospetto del Re, a Napoli, con barbara ferocia, si esercita l’infame gioco dei Gladiatori; e come sangue di pecore, l’umano sangue si sparge, e, plaudendo l’insano volgo affollato, sotto gli occhi dei miseri genitori, si scannano i figli.” In parole povere il buon Petrarca rimase esterrefatto alla vista di quel sangue, sparso inutilmente e non poté fare a meno di sfogarsi col Cardinale. Per la cronaca, tutte le domeniche ed i giorni festivi era consuetudine vedere incontrarsi nobili e plebei, e messa da parte ogni amicizia, si assisteva a veri combattimenti per il solo gusto di avere gli applausi dagli spettatori e la gloria della vittoria. Le Giostre ebbero luogo fino all’800.

At the time of the Middle Ages many cities had outside the boundary walls of the graves prepared to accommodate any kind of waste, called Carbonario or Carboneto. Places designed to accommodate any sort of waste, such as sewage or animal carcasses. In the city of Vesuvius, the Carbonario was located where the road currently stands and the majestic church of San Giovanni a Carbonara. Not far away, in Piazza Carbonara, were the rides, or equestrian games or fights between Gladiators, which represented the fun of the people and the rulers. Piazza Carbonara, of course, enjoyed immunity, so two individuals or two brigades had the chance to fight until death and go unpunished. Moreover, in case of offense everyone could challenge the offender in this square in a duel. The duels had become a habit and it was a kind of show, which was attended by curious, not only the commoners but also the Lords and the Princes. The well-known Tuscan poet Francesco Petrarca, who saw one of these games, tells them in a letter written to Cardinal Giovanni Colonna. He wrote the following: “In full day, at the sight of the People, in the presence of the King, in Naples, with barbarous ferocity, the infamous game of Gladiators is practiced, and like the blood of sheep, the human blood spreads, and, applauding the insane crowded, under the eyes of poor parents, they slaughter their children. “ In short, the good Petrarch was stunned at the sight of that blood, scattered in vain and could not help but vent with the Cardinal. For the record, on Sundays and holidays it was customary to see nobles and plebeians meet, and setting aside all friendships, there were real fights for the sake of having the applause from the spectators and the glory of victory. The Jousting took place until the beginning of the 19th century.
