Gaspar Roomer, illustre banchiere fiammingo mecenate e collezionista d’arte, di natali olandesi, ma di adozione napoletana, avendo vissuto nella città partenopea dal 1630, per oltre quarant’anni, divenne presto ricco e famoso grazie alle sue attività commerciali ed al suo incarico di finanziere del re di Spagna Filippo IV. Allorché si trasferì a Napoli, risiedette in una splendida Villa nota prima come ‘Villa Bisignano’ e successivamente come ‘Villa Roomer, situata nell’omonimo quartiere Barra, nel capoluogo campano. Gaspar Roomer fu, dunque, molto attratto dall’arte per cui era solito dedicarsi al commercio di dipinti tra il Sud e il Nord Italia grazie anche alla collaborazione di agenti come gli artisti fiamminghi e commercianti Cornelis de Wael ed Abraham Brueghel, che erano residenti nelle città di Genova e Roma.
